Ever since the arrival of computers accountants have searched for better ways to share data with clients. Every year accounting firms spend hundreds of hours transferring and uploading files, checking them for errors, returning them to clients for corrections them bringing then up to date. Meanwhile, each client's accounting system is effectively frozen, waiting for a definitive set of numbers so they can draw a line in the past and start accumulating new entries.
Cloud-based accounting promises to change all that. By storing data online, cloud packages allow businesses and their advisors to share a single database thats always up to date. Because the data is stored on a cloud platform rather than in a closed, proprietary system, it can also be accessed and updated by different applications. And the application is also hosted online, so it can be accessed anywhere with just a web browser.
Based in Brisbane's Mount Gravatt, accounting firm Consolid8 is a LiveAccounts accredited consultant and a gold partner with Xero and Saasu. Consolid8 director Tanya Titman CPA says about 60 per cent of their clients use cloud-based solutions. "The reason we endorse it and like our clients to use it is that we have access to their live data," Titman says. "There are a lot of problems when you're moving data files back and forward from the client to the accountant, so when you're all working from the same file it's a much better solution."
